Rugs are a vital part of home decor. They come in all shapes and sizes, and there are a variety of styles and patterns to fit every space. However, they can be difficult to store and maintain because of their size and the different fabrics they come in. If you store them incorrectly, they can lose their shape and develop unpleasant odors. Here are some quick tips to help you store your rugs properly and keep them in pristine condition for years to come.

1. Clean them.
Before you store your rugs, clean them thoroughly. Vacuum loose debris and spot clean any stains or residue you can see. If you have pets or small children, inspect the rug for any serious imperfections.

2. Know what materials you’re working with.
After you’ve vacuumed and brushed away grime, get ready to steam clean your rug. But before you begin, double check the rug material and read the cleaning instructions on the tag. If you have any doubts, contact a professional carpet cleaner to get their opinion. Just be careful not to take any steps that could permanently damage your rug.

3. Roll up the rug.
Rugs should never be folded. Doing so can cause creases to develop. Instead, roll up your rug using a rod to help keep it straight. Make sure the back of the rug is facing outwards to protect the fabric inside.

4. Keep pests away.
Leftover dirt and bacteria can attract insects and pests. Protect your rugs by spraying them with a light repellant. Just make sure the repellent is safe for fabrics. You can also create a natural solution out of water and vinegar.

5. Protect your rug.
Cover your rug with a cotton sheet or brown craft paper. These materials will still allow your fabric to breathe. Don’t use plastic, which can be suffocating.
