Moving out of your parents’ house in Joplin, MO can be both exciting and overwhelming. If you’re a high school or college grad and you’re about to transition into an apartment or home of your own, congratulations! Keep reading for five helpful tips that will help you step gracefully into this next chapter of your life.

1. Mentally prepare.
It’s normal to feel anxious about your future, especially when you have no idea where it’s going to lead you. If you feel nervous about leaving the safety of your parents’ house, that’s normal! Don’t bury your feelings. Embrace them, even when they feel overwhelming, and process them. This will help you move forward into the next phase of your life.

2. Have a conversation with your parents.
If you feel comfortable opening up to your parents, talk to them about your feelings and concerns. They might have the right words to ease your anxiety. Talk to them about what you’re planning to bring to your new space, how to manage your finances, or anything else that comes to mind. Don’t go into the conversation with any expectations, but express appreciation if they’re able to offer help.

3. Make a plan for your belongings.
If you have a ton of trophies, yearbooks, toys, and photo albums from childhood, talk to your parents about what you want to do with those things. Save some memorable treasures, if you feel inclined, but don’t be afraid to throw out most of your stuff. It might feel scary to get rid of those things, but you’ll need the space for new items and memories.

4. Figure out your moving plan.
In order to avoid stress, create a moving plan. Do you need to buy cardboard boxes? Rent a truck? Pick up your keys on a certain day? Pay your first month of rent? Keep track of the details, and make sure you’re prepared.

5. Create a budget, and stick to it.
This is one of the most difficult challenges of adulthood: Managing your finances wisely. While you’re first venturing out on your own, choose Walmart over Target, Wayfair over West Elm, and Facebook Marketplace over brand new. You can still create a cozy, comfortable home on a budget. Live below your means until you’ve achieved your savings goals. Even then, continue to stick to your budget.
