High quality jewelry is often expensive. It makes sense that you’d want to keep those precious items in mint condition so they can be worn for many years to come! If you want to prevent your most cherished jewelry from tarnishing and deteriorating while in storage, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading for some quick jewelry storage tips.

1. Store your jewelry properly.
First, separate your jewelry by the type of metal. Keep your costume jewelry away from pure silver or gold. If they mingle, your pieces might tarnish.

In addition, keep similar pieces together. Gold should be with gold, and silver should be with silver. If you can, put each piece in a separate box. This will prevent chains from becoming tangled. Keep in mind that heat and light can deteriorate certain metals, so it’s best to keep your jewelry out of direct sunlight.

2. Clean your jewelry.
Clean each piece thoroughly before placing them in storage. This will prevent dirt and grime from tarnishing your pieces. Don’t use any harsh chemicals or cleaners on your jewelry. Soap and warm water will do the job just fine. It’s also good to invest in an anti-tarnish cloth and jewelry polish.

3. Wrap your jewelry in muslin.
Muslin is great for protecting jewelry and preventing tarnish. Wrap your pieces in this cloth before storing them away.

4. Use silica gel.
If you live in a humid climate, you might benefit from putting silica gel in your jewelry box. Silica gel helps absorb excess moisture, which can cause your jewelry to tarnish. If you don’t have silica gel, activated charcoal will also work!
